At White Tiger Karate, she teaches a diverse array of classes, including Pai Lum Kung Fu, Karate, Parkour, and SKILLZ, a child development program she credits for its transformative impact on young students.
With a career spanning more than four decades in the field of child education, Sensei Sharyl’s passion for teaching remains as strong as the day she began. Her broad range of life experiences has enabled her to reach and connect with individuals from all walks of life. Throughout her career, she has served her community in various capacities: as a recreation therapist, teacher, coach, firefighter/EMT, and youth care specialist. Holding a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and Health and a Master of Science in Recreation and Leisure with a specialization in Therapeutic Recreation, Sensei Sharyl is a recognized leader in child development, with specialties in autism, ADHD, ADD, behavioral issues, anger management, and physical adaptations.
In partnership with outstanding medical groups, including Health First Family Care Center, Genesis Behavioral Health, and Spaulding Youth Center, Sensei Sharyl integrates the latest research and clinical practices into her teaching approach, providing holistic support to the families she serves. She credits her teacher, Grandmaster Clarence Cooper Jr., for his profound influence on her journey, citing his expertise, compassionate leadership, and genuine love for the art of Pai Lum as the foundation for her own martial arts philosophy.
Sensei Sharyl’s martial arts journey began in the early 1980s, and over the years, she has studied a wide variety of styles, including Kung Fu, Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Kempo, Kenpo, Krav Maga, Muay Thai, and Tai Kwon Do. She holds various ranks across these disciplines, but her primary focus remains on teaching Pai Lum Kung Fu, Karate, and the innovative SKILLZ Program. She is a certified AWSDA Rape Prevention Instructor and continues to teach personal self-defense to students of all ages.
As a proud member of the SKILLZ® team, Sensei Sharyl trains directly under Melody Johnson, the creator of the SKILLZ program and a renowned child development expert. Melody’s expertise has deeply influenced Sensei Sharyl’s approach to teaching, infusing her martial arts instruction with the latest in child psychology and development principles. This ensures that the martial arts training at White Tiger Karate is not only a physical discipline but also a developmental experience. The instructors at White Tiger Karate, including the STORM Leadership Team, undergo ongoing training in child development through this esteemed program. This enables White Tiger Karate’s children’s program to be much more than a martial arts class—it is a comprehensive child development course designed to help children grow physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially.
Beyond her teaching, Sensei Sharyl is dedicated to giving back to her community. She has donated countless free classes in martial arts and women’s self-defense and raised thousands of dollars to support families in need through various fundraisers. Her contributions to her community have earned her recognition as one of “Top Women You Should Know in NH”, as well as the prestigious “Woman of Achievement” award from the Business and Professional Women’s Club. Under her leadership, White Tiger Karate was named the Best of the Lakes Region Winner in 2025, further solidifying its reputation as one of the top martial arts schools in the region.
Sensei Sharyl’s unwavering commitment to the safety, well-being, and development of her community continues to inspire and empower those around her.
